# Droplets on Quake AI

A DigitalOcean **Droplet** is a Linux or Windows VM with a fixed plan size and a proprietary control API. On Quake AI the same role is an **[instance](/docs/compute/concepts/instances)** created through Nova: you pick a **flavor**, an **image**, networks, and optional **volumes** instead of a Droplet size slug.

## Mapping Droplet habits

| Droplet concept | On Quake AI |
|---|---|
| Droplet | [Instance](/docs/compute/concepts/instances) |
| Size slug | [Flavor](/docs/compute/concepts/flavors) |
| Distribution image | [Image](/docs/compute/concepts/images) |
| Volume | [Block volume](/docs/block/concepts/volumes) |
| VPC | [Networks](/docs/network/concepts/networks) + [routers](/docs/network/concepts/routers) (see [VPC on Quake AI](/docs/network/concepts/vpc)) |
| Reserved IP | [Floating IP](/docs/network/concepts/floating-ips) |
| Cloud firewall | [Security group](/docs/network/concepts/security-groups) |
| `doctl` | [OpenStack CLI](/docs/tools/openstack-cli) or Terraform `openstack` provider |

DigitalOcean Kubernetes (DOKS) maps to self-managed or Magnum-style clusters on Quake AI; see [Kubernetes clusters](/docs/kubernetes/concepts/kubernetes-clusters).
