GCP distinguishes machine images (full VM state including all attached disks, metadata, network config) from disk images (single disk) and disk snapshots (incremental backup). OpenStack Nova createImage is equivalent to a machine image — full instance capture stored in Glance.
GCP machine images can be created while the VM is running (app-consistent with optional guest flushing). OpenStack Nova createImage does not require VM shutdown; consistency depends on whether the guest has quiescing agents installed.
GCP machine images are stored regionally and must be explicitly replicated to other regions. Glance images are stored in the configured backend (Ceph, Swift) with replication determined by backend configuration.
