Team chat
Run channel-based team chat on a self-hosted Mattermost Team Edition instance. You operate teams, channels, and integrations; Quake AI provides the Compute instance, network, and block storage the platform runs on.
What this is for#
Teams that communicate over channels, direct messages, and integrations need a chat platform that doesn't meter seats. Mattermost Team Edition (a self-hosted alternative to Slack) gives a team that platform, running on infrastructure you own. The outcome is a team-chat instance your team logs into on day one, deployable from a validated OpenTofu template and its companion tutorial.

The base is a single validated template: Mattermost team chat provisions the instance, network, and volume Mattermost runs on.

Team members. Developers and teammates communicate over channels, direct messages, and integrations through Mattermost's web and desktop clients.

Reverse proxy. The edge reverse proxy template terminates HTTPS on a floating IP and forwards to Mattermost on the private subnet, since Mattermost needs a public URL for invite links, OAuth, and calls.

Mattermost app. The Mattermost team chat template runs Mattermost in Docker on a Compute instance, alongside a bundled PostgreSQL.

Bundled datastore. PostgreSQL stores channels, messages, and configuration, along with the config, data, logs, plugin, and search-index directories, all on a Block Storage volume.

VPC objects are usually free to create elsewhere, but NAT gateways bill hourly plus per-GB processed. Quake AI uses router SNAT with no separate NAT line item.
Control-plane API requests
OpenStack API calls for provisioning and management are included.
Some managed services on other clouds meter API calls or charge for premium control-plane features.

Considerations and limits#
- You operate the System Console. Quake AI provisions the instance; team structure, channel policy, and plugin management are yours under the shared responsibility model.
- Sized for a small-to-mid team. The default flavor (4 vCPU, 4 GiB RAM) suits a small-to-mid team. Mattermost's own scaling guidance recommends more compute for large enterprise deployments, and splitting PostgreSQL onto its own instance as the team grows: point
